Kids Are First

The PTSO is sponsoring the Kids Are First gift sale. Our class has been doing a fablous job collecting orders and turning in their coupons. Last Thursday our class out sold all the other classes in the school! So last Friday we were able to keep Simon the monkey for a day. The class read to him and gave him many big hugs.

Keeping Count

On Monday afternoon our class has P.E. on the upper field behind the cafeteria. We run the field and practice on the bars. Some of the children are naturals at going across the bars others are trying to hang and hold their own weight. Last week we began to keep records of Who could hang the longest. This week we added Who could cross the fastest. Well the results are Ruben could hang the longest with a record of 70 seconds! Heaven came in second by hanging 51 second. Ruben and America both tied in crossing the fastest with a time of 4.1 seconds! We also had a BIG and I mean BIG first today! Dotty made it to the third step, reach out and hung on the bar for 3 seconds. Three cheers for Dotty! We are all proud of you.

The Book Fair is now over. I was pleased to see the children interested in buying and reading their new books. A big THANK YOU to Heaven’s family for granting a book wish for our class. Her family purchased the book Our Class is Going Green to add to our classroom collection of books. :) Books are great gifts that last a life time.

I’d like to recognize Eternity’s grandma for helping out with our homework. She is doing a fantastic job! Her efforts are keeping everyone up to date with the homework assignments.

Homonyms…Have you heard your child say this word this past week? They are words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Take the word see and sea. See means to look and sea refers to the ocean. Keep your ears and eyes on the look out for more homonyms. Try making a list of all the ones you can find.

Complete Sentences…Does your child just shake his or her head to answer your questions? Do they give one or two word answers? Make it a game to encourage your child to speak in complete sentences. If they are having a hard time answering using a complete sentence say the sentence for them then have your child repeateed it back to you. You will be surprised how fast your child’s sentence structure will grow.

Are you courious about Rosie and Oswald? Check out thier page. You can see a picture of them taking a break from their busy week.

This Wednesday is Picture Day! Uniforms are NOT required to be worn. Remember to send your photo envelope with your money and photo choices. Everyones photo will be taken for the school and class pictures. Only paid photos will be printed and delivered. This is a chance for you to order great pictures at a reasonable price. Whole class pictures may be ordered too. This is the only time of the year class pictures are offered. If you forget or do not send money on this day there will be a make-up picture day.

Check out the pictures posted under the Picture tab. We have a real actor teaching us about the theatre on Wednesday afternoons. You will find pictures of our first lesson . I think you will agree that we were enjoying learning about how our faces can show feelings.  Asked your child about the three areas of our face that are used in the theatre to show expression. (eyes and eyebrows, nose and cheeks, mouth and chin) Can you guess which area shows the most expression? If you guessed the eyes and eyebrows you are correct!

This Week we will start our Daily Reading Logs. There will be a different Reading Log for each grade. The logs are due on Thursday. The first Reading Log sheet will be sent home this Thursday and are expected to be returned the following Thursday. Be sure to read 15 minutes nightly.

Welcome

Welcome to all the new first graders! We are happy to have you join us. Last week we were made into a 1st and 2nd grade class. We now have almost half 1st grade and half second. I had the honor of meeting many of our parents at Back To School night last Tuesday. If you missed this you can view our schedule, rules, as well as other information right here. Just click on the tab above to find the page.

PLEASE NOTE! If you have not signed the parent form giving me permission to use your child’s picture or work on our site please do so. It is a great way for all of us to share what is going on in our classroom. There will be no names next to pictures or work that is posted. Only first names of students will be used to recognize Good Citizens and other achievements.
